Valve introduced several charts of the most successful games in 2018 on Steam, dividing them into the new products of the year showing the total range of the store.

In the main standings, the company has divided game releases into four categories: platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. It is impossible to say how much approximately the games have earned in each of them, however, the “platinum” ones have sold over a million copies.

Inside each category, the games are arranged randomly. It is worth noting that among the most successful projects, in 2018 there were only three new items (one from Capcom and two from Ubisoft) and three shareware projects.

“Platinum”

  • Monster Hunter: World (2018);
  • Far Cry 5 (2018);
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018);
  • The Elder Scrolls Online (2014);
  • Warframe (2013);
  • Rainbow Six Siege (2015);
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012);
  • Dota 2 (2013);
  • Rocket League (2015);
  • PUBG (2017);
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization VI (2016);
  • Grand Theft Auto V (2015 on the PC).

“Gold”

In the “gold” category just four releases came from last year, including the previous Assassin’s Creed.

  • Path of Exile (2013);
  • Stellaris (2016);
  • Jurassic World: Evolution (2018);
  • Total War: Warhammer II (2017);
  • Divinity: Original Sin II (2017);
  • “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” (2015);
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (2017);
  • ARK: Survival Evolved (2017);
  • Dead by Daylight (2016);
  • Cities Skylines (2015);
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018).

In the “silver” category the following notable releases can be noted: Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, No Man’s Sky, Subnautica, Frostpunk and Fallout 4. In the “bronze”: Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, RimWorld, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, Artifact and Soul Calibur VI.

You can see the most popular releases on a separate Valve page, but for the most part, these are simply the main releases of a certain period – there are no surprises there.

The Game Awards is an annual award ceremony celebrating achievements in the computer games industry. The Game Awards is a large-scale show that attracts a lot of media attention and is held at the end of the calendar year. In addition to awarding game developers themselves, the ceremony includes music performances, performances by various figures from the gaming industry, announcements, and trailers of new games. The Game Awards is the successor to the Spike Video Game Awards ceremony, held annually from 2003 to 2013 under the patronage of Spike TV. The founder, producer and permanent presenter of The Game Awards is Canadian journalist and TV host Jeff Kayle, who for many years has served as the lead for the Spike Video Game Awards.

Traditionally, the award ceremony of the Spike Video Game Awards took place in December, before the start of the Christmas sales season – as opposed to another important event in the gaming industry, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, usually held in June; The Game Awards occupy this niche. In 2013, the Spike Video Game Awards show was renamed VGX (instead of the old VGA abbreviation) – its producers wanted to show the individual attention that the show is paying to the games and gaming platforms of the new generation. The sole VGX ceremony has been criticized as being overly commercial – presenter Jeff Kayle abandoned an advertising presentation rather than the presentation of prestigious awards and at the end of 2014 Spike TV announced the final closure of the project. When Spike TV’s plans to continue VGA / VGX is still uncertain, Kayle announced the establishment of a new ceremony to replace the Spike Video Game Awards.

Unlike the old game-oriented ceremony, The Game Awards pays much more attention to developers, computer games and e-sports players, as well as gaming communities. The show received support from the largest companies in the gaming market – Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, as well as other gaming companies. If the Spike Video Game Awards ceremony was broadcast live only on the Spike TV channel itself, viewing The Game Awards via streaming video services is available within the Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Nintendo Network, and Steam networks – in 2014 the number of users on these networks was about 100 million people. The first expert council to elect winners includes Hideo Kojima (head of Kojima Productions), Martin Trembey (head of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment), Peter Moore (executive director of Electronic Arts), Phil Spencer (head of Xbox at Microsoft), Reggie Fees -Eme (head of Nintendo of America), Sean Leiden (director of Sony Computer Entertainment America), Yves Guillemo (CEO of Ubisoft), representatives from Valve and Rockstar Games.

International Exhibition

International Exhibition
Dates: 13.06.2019 – 15.06.2019
Venue: Los Angeles Convention Center (Los Angeles, USA)
Theme: Amusement Rides, Entertainment, Gambling
Organizers: ESA Entertainment Software Association

E3 traditionally hosts large-scale press conferences from the largest gaming companies – Microsoft, Sony, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Bethesda, as well as smaller presentations – for example, PC Gaming Shows, dedicated to PC as a gaming platform. In addition, throughout the exhibition, the public is literally bombarded with new trailers and gameplay demonstrations of games, and the noise does not abate for several weeks after it, while gamers and game publications discuss what they see and hear.

It is worth saying that the Electronic Entertainment Expo was first held in 1995. Initiative – IDG and Entertainment Software Association. Moreover, it was then that the release of the favorite Sega Saturn game console and the announcements of the PlayStation, Virtual Boy, and Neo Geo CD took place. Being at the height of progress, the event fell in love with gamers.

It is curious that from 2006 to 2008 it was held under the name E3 Media and Business Summit. The organizer of the ball is the same company: Entertainment Software Association (ESA). However, the exhibition was more focused on creators, publishers, and suppliers of digital entertainment, and not on end users – us.

Later, the event changed the format, reorienting to those who directly play video games. Today this is a grand show that gathers tens of thousands of gamers at the Los Angeles Exhibition Center. Moreover, their number is growing every year. Last year, 68,400 people arrived at E3. To accommodate a large number of guests, the organizers decided in advance to stretch the exhibition for three days.

Electronic Entertainment Expo is the largest exhibition dedicated to games for personal computers, portable consoles, and consoles. There are other events in the industry, such as the Tokyo Game Show, Gamescom, PlayStation Experience, Game Developers Conference and more. However, E3 stands out for scale. In three days, tens of thousands of players and dozens of companies involved in the development and publishing of video games have time to visit the exhibition. And this year will not be an exception.

Which companies will be present at E3 2019

As it is known, Sony, for the first time of its 24 years history is not going to come to the Electronic Entertainment Expo – E3 2019. At the event, the Japanese company not only will not hold their press conference but also the stands that they build to promote products at the exhibition will also not be present.
However, Sony’s direct competitors have already confirmed their participation and have promised much news.

We have much news for Xbox fans at E3 2019.
The exhibition is always one of the critical moments of the year, where you can see with your own eyes the creativity of the industry and the energy of the community.
Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox

Besides, their participation in the exhibition was confirmed by:

  • Activision;
  • Bethesda;
  • Capcom;
  • Konami;
  • Square Enix;
  • Take-Two;
  • Ubisoft;
  • Warner Brothers.

Nintendo Switch has the rating as the most successful projects in 2018 in the American eShop segment of the Japanese corporation.

Although it is entitled to the title “best-selling”, there was a place for shareware projects in the list, so perhaps we are talking about dollar revenue and not the number of downloads or purchases of the product itself. However, without exact data, it is difficult to say.

It is noteworthy that various reissues like Diablo III, Okami and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze were also included in the rating. Perhaps the European, Russian and Asian charts will appear later – it would be interesting to look at them and compare them with the American list.

At BlizzCon 2018, Blizzard made many announcements. The Remaster of Warcraft 3 and the new characters for Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm did not save the situation regarding the first trailer of the new Diablo mobile game. Shown to fans was Diablo Immortal which is a mobile game. Many people called it a copy of other slashers released on Android and iOS after seeing the trailer. Terrible trailer, which brought together almost 200 thousand dislikes (and only 4 thousand likes), as well as the constant removal of negative comments, does not help.

Fans took the new Diablo mobile game very negatively. According to many gamers, Blizzard presented “another soulless mobile toy, created only for the mass siphoning of money from fans of the series.”

First, Blizzard removed all the negative comments that collected several thousand likes. When it stopped helping, the company decided to reload the trailers shown at BlizzCon, thus “resetting” the video likes to counter. However, this did not stop gamers: a new video at the time of writing the news gathered 29 thousand dislikes and only 370 likes.

What kind of imaginary Blizzard projects would people like more: Diablo 4, the animated series in the Diablo universe, the Diablo comic series, MMO in the Diablo universe, a new character for Diablo 3 or a new add-on for Diablo 3. It is a pity that these are just dreams.

tmson77

By the way, Diablo Immortal is not developed by Blizzard itself, but the Chinese studio NetEase. Some fans have already seen in the demo the similarities to a failed game for this other studio. For example, with Endless Of God. At one time, it was even called mobile Diablo!

Gamers around the world are very disappointed with the new Diablo, saying that the series has come to an end. Rumors about the announcement of the new part of the legendary game were partially truthful, while all the information leaks about the game tactfully avoided the fact that it would be a mobile game.

Dota 2 became the leader among eSports disciplines regarding the total amount of prize money awarded in 2018. The total fund of all MOBA tournaments from Valve was more than $ 41 million. Out of these, 2018 only paid $ 25.5 million at The International – more than the entire CS: GO prize fund, which ranked second. Data provided by Esports Earnings.

Fortnite is the third highest payout eSport. The developers of Epic Games have only spent one-fifth of the $ 100 million that the company allocated to eSports in 2018–2019. The top ten ranking of cash prize payouts also include League of Legends, PUBG and four games from Blizzard. The last place in the list was taken by the Call of Duty shooter: WWII with $ 4.17 million total prize pool.

Top 10 disciplines for the prize fund in 2018:

  • Dota 2 – $ 41.26 million;
  • CS:GO – $ 22.47 million;
  • Fortnite – $ 19.96 million;
  • League of Legends – $ 14.12 million;
  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – $ 6.73 million;
  • Overwatch – $ 6.7 million;
  • Heroes of the Storm – $ 6.52 million;
  • Hearthstone – $ 4.95 million;
  • StarCraft II – $ 4.53 million;
  • Call of Duty: WWII – $ 4.17 million

Steam has stopped support for Windows XP, Vista

I also want to mention that Since January 1, Steam online service from Valve has stopped supporting outdated operating systems. Among them are the operating systems Windows XP, Windows Vista, and all macOS versions, which were released before OS X El Capitan. About this, the company warned in us in the past.

Termination of support means that the Steam client will not start on these operating systems. To use the service and the games purchased on it, you will have to install something more modern.

Of the possible reasons for this decision, we can note the fact that the new Steam features are based on the development of Google Chrome, and this browser has already ceased to support the outdated OSs. Besides, in the future, Steam will need security protocols, which are now present only in the new Windows versions.
